Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor had been eagerly counting down the hours until she could reunite with her husband and children. Instead of celebrating her long-awaited return home, her family is now facing a devastating loss that feels like a cruel twist of fate. đź’”

The 39-year-old soldier from White Bear Lake was among those killed during military strikes in the Middle East last weekend. According to the United States Department of Defense, Nicole died on Sunday in Port Shuaiba during an unmanned aircraft system attack.

She wasn’t only a soldier — she was also a devoted mother, a loving wife, and a passionate gardener who enjoyed making salsa with her teenage son. Now, her husband, Joey Amor, is opening up about the unsettling details surrounding the days before the tragedy.

The Risk Behind the “Safe” Relocation

In a revelation that’s now prompting serious questions, Joey shared that his wife had been reassigned just a week before the attack. She was moved off-base to a structure similar to a shipping container that reportedly had no defensive protection.

According to reports, military leaders had begun spreading troops into smaller groups because they believed the main base could become a target. Ironically, the decision meant to increase safety may have put them directly in the path of an Iranian weapon that ultimately breached the area’s defenses.

What makes the situation even more troubling is that some officials had reportedly raised concerns internally about the site’s safety. A number of them believed the location gathered too many troops in a place that would have been extremely difficult to protect.

A Final Conversation That Never Finished

Joey’s last exchange with his wife came just two hours before the deadly strike. They had been texting about something ordinary—she had mentioned tripping and falling the night before during one of her long shifts.

“She just never replied the next morning,” Joey said, recalling the painful silence that followed their final messages. The unexpected loss has left their family devastated, including their high school senior son and fourth-grade daughter, who loved rollerblading and biking with their mom.

“She was so close to being home,” her husband said from their Minnesota house. He added that no one heads to Kuwait expecting something like this, which makes the fact that she became one of the first casualties even harder to accept.

A Service Legacy
Nicole joined the National Guard in 2005, marking the start of her military career. Eventually, she joined the Army Reserve and was assigned to the Des Moines, Iowa-based 103rd Sustainment Command.

She received the National Defense Medal and the Army Commendation Medal during her illustrious career. She strikes a balance between her love for her family and her uniform, as evidenced by her Facebook profile and family tribute pages.

“She answered the call to serve and gave her life in service to our state and nation,” said Governor Tim Walz, joining the chorus of mourners. Minnesotans are wrapping our arms around her loved ones.”

A family in White Bear Lake is left wondering what may have happened if she had returned home a few days earlier, as the military commemorates her valiant sacrifice.
