When Martha’s mother-in-law offers to babysit her daughter every Wednesday, it seems like a simple favor — until little Bev begins acting differently. Desperate to understand what’s going on, Martha sets up a hidden camera… and what she uncovers shakes her to the core. The deception, the manipulation, the betrayal — it all runs far deeper than she ever suspected.

I wish I could say I was imagining it. That stress or exhaustion had made me paranoid. But I wasn’t wrong. And I would give anything to have been.

My name is Martha. My daughter, Beverly, is four. My husband, Jason, and I both work full-time, so Bev spends most weekdays at daycare. I already carry enough guilt about that — even though it wasn’t really a choice. Still, she was happy. We were happy. Life felt steady.

Then about a month ago, my mother-in-law, Cheryl, made what sounded like a generous offer.

“Why don’t I take Beverly on Wednesdays?” she suggested at dinner. “It’ll give her a break from daycare and give us some quality grandma time.”

She even offered to keep Bev at our house so she’d feel comfortable — maybe take her to the park or out for ice cream now and then.

Cheryl and I were never especially close. There was always something faintly critical in her tone when she spoke to me. But this seemed harmless. Thoughtful, even. And yes, it would save us some money.

If I’m honest, I liked the idea of my daughter being with family.

So I agreed.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then Beverly began to change.

It started small.

“I only want to eat with Daddy, Grandma, and her friend,” she said one night, pushing away the dinner I made.

I frowned. “Grandma’s friend?”

She just smiled in a secretive way.

I assumed she meant someone from daycare. But she kept mentioning this “friend.” And slowly, she began pulling away from me.

One night while I tucked her in, she clutched her stuffed unicorn and whispered, “Mommy, why don’t you like our friend?”

A chill ran through me.

“Who told you that?”

She hesitated, then recited in a tone far too polished for a four-year-old:

“Our friend is part of the family. You just don’t see it yet.”

My stomach twisted. Something was happening — something I couldn’t see.

That weekend, when Cheryl came over for breakfast, I asked casually whether Bev had made any new friends.

Cheryl barely glanced up from her coffee. “Kids invent imaginary friends all the time, Martha.”

Her voice was smooth. Too smooth.

My instincts screamed that she was lying.

That night, I did something I never thought I would: I reinstalled an old hidden camera in the living room — one we’d used years ago when Bev was a baby and we had a night nanny.

I hated doing it. But I needed answers.

The following Wednesday, I left for work as usual. By lunchtime, I could barely focus. My hands trembled as I opened the live feed on my phone.

At first, everything looked normal. Bev played with her dolls on the floor. Cheryl sat on the couch with tea and a book.

Then Cheryl checked her watch.

“Bev, sweetheart, are you ready? Our friend will be here any minute now!”

My stomach dropped.

“Yes, Gran! I love her! Do you think she’ll play with my hair again?”

Her.

Cheryl smiled warmly. “If you ask nicely. And you remember what we don’t tell Mommy?”

Bev answered sweetly, “Not a word to Mom.”

My breath caught.

Then the doorbell rang.

Cheryl stood and walked to the door, smoothing her blouse.

When she opened it, my blood ran cold.

Jason’s ex-wife, Alexa, stepped inside my house.

The woman he had left years ago. The woman I’d been told had moved out of state for a fresh start.

And my daughter ran straight into her arms.

I don’t remember grabbing my keys. I don’t remember the drive home. One moment I was watching my world fracture on a tiny screen — the next, I was racing back to face it.
