I thought I could handle the embarrassment—but nothing prepared me for what happened at midnight, when he pressed a small box into my hand and whispered something that made my knees nearly give out.

Everyone laughed when the school’s most ridiculed boy asked me to prom—even my older brother, who always treated me like my life was something he needed to control. I thought the worst part would be the embarrassment. I was wrong.

Because at the end of our dance, Theo pressed a red folder into my hands and whispered, almost shaking, “Your brother is lying to you.”

His name was Theo. Always a little too nervous in a thrift-store suit, shoes polished until they reflected the gym lights, braces and glasses catching every glance. On Monday, he stood by my locker with trembling hands and asked me to prom.

The hallway erupted into laughter. Phones came out. Whispers followed.

My best friend pulled me aside immediately, warning me that my brother would never allow it—that he would “lose it” over me going with someone like Theo. Someone he didn’t approve of. Someone he thought wasn’t good enough.

But I remembered what no one else seemed to care about: years ago, when Theo was being bullied, I was the only one who stepped in. After that, he never stopped being kind to me—helping with schoolwork, greeting me every morning, quietly showing up in ways no one else did.

So I said yes.

By prom night, the whole school treated us like a joke. Theo was nervous, but gentle. Careful. Like the night mattered more than the judgment.

During our last dance, he suddenly pulled back and said he had to do something. He walked straight to the stage.

At first, I thought he was going to thank me.

Instead, he looked at me in front of everyone and said, “You think you saved me by saying yes. But I’m saving you too—from your brother. Please… look inside.”

He handed me a red folder.

The moment I opened it, everything in me collapsed.

My brother burst into the room seconds later, furious, trying to stop me from reading it—but it was already too late. I had seen enough to understand what Theo was warning me about… and what Marcus had been hiding from me for years.
